Two Miami County teens died after sustaining injuries in a single car accident Sunday evening.

Ashley N. Rusie, 16, 10203 E. CR 400 N., Peru, daughter of Mark and Lori Rusie, and a North Miami High School student, died on impact from the accident.

Her passenger, Kaitlin (Katie) N. Cole, 15, 75 E. Fifth St., Peru, daughter of Dr. James and Sandra Cole and Michelle and Eric Rose, all of Peru, and a Peru High School student, also died on impact during the accident which happened at 4 p.m. Sunday.

Witnesses to the accident reported Rusie’s vehicle, a 1996 green Oldsmobile, was traveling west on Wabash Road near Paw Paw Pike at what appeared to be a high rate of speed, according to Deputy Linda Sutton of the Miami County Sheriff’s Department.

Sutton said the passenger tires of the car went off the right side of the road and Rusie over corrected, causing the car to leave the road and enter a ravine. While traveling in the ravine, the car struck one tree with its front driver’s side, spinning it sideways. It then struck a second tree.

Rusie was ejected from the vehicle, despite the fact that she and Cole were both wearing seat belts.

Sutton said it did not appear there was any alcohol or drugs involved in the accident, just speed.

She also reported an Indiana State Police accident reconstructionist may be called in today to determine the exact speed the car was traveling.

Fundraiser to benefit Rusie/Cole scholarship

Ryan McGuire and Richelle Weller were proclaimed this year's Mr. and Miss Sweetie recently, as the North Miami senior class sponsored a Little Sweetie Contest.

The contest was used as a means to help raise money for a scholarship in memory of Ashley Rusie and Katie Cole. Rusie, a North Miami High School student, and Cole, who attended Peru High School, both lost their lives in an automobile accident two years ago.

Heading the contest were North Miami seniors Kayla Arnett, Megan Oldfather, Abbey Hudson and Mattie Lawson. The group began working on ideas for fundraising some time ago and decided on the Little Sweetie Contest earlier this month.

"We decided about a month ago to do this," Arnett said. "It was just something fun to get the little kids involved in, and we felt like we could raise a lot of money with it."

The students began putting out collection cans for the 14 children involved in early February and then set out donation cans at the school during the final week.

"We have a lot of other things we are probably going to do," Arnett said. "Some other ideas we may give a try. This was something, though, that we felt would be easy to set up and have a really good turn out."

This was evident as the children collected $3,352.35. Richelle Weller, the two-year-old daughter of Danielle and Aaron Weller, was named Miss Sweetie by collecting $646.48. Ryan McGuire, the one-year-old son of Shane and Angela McGuire collected $560.05 to win the title of Mr. Sweetie.

"I thought it was just fantastic," Arnett said. "The turnout for the entire thing was great.”
